CNH Industrial, a global leader in the capital goods sector, as a part of its continuous drive to streamline manufacturing processes, has released its first 3D printed spare parts for buses and agriculture equipment. It is leading the way in the innovative use of 3D printers to manufacture components and spare parts.

Through its 12 brands, CNH Industrial makes vehicles that help agriculture and industry growth. From tractors and combines to trucks and buses, as well as powertrain solutions for on-road and off-road and marine vehicles, CNH Industrial designs, produces and sells machines for work. As shown in the image above, Iveco brand is for commercial vehicles, buses, quarry & construction vehicles and Iveco Defence Vehicles for defence and civil protection.

3D Printed Spare Parts

CNH Industrial has always strived to innovate the manufacturing processes and now it has taken a significant step in the implementation of Additive Manufacturing technology by producing its first 3D printed spare parts.

The basic workflow is easy, solid components are created from a digital file through 3D printing technology. Once the part is printed, each part undergoes stringent testing to ensure it CNH Industrial’s requirements and specifications.

One of the main advantages of 3D printing is that it enables on-demand, local manufacturing of spare parts. These 3D printed spare parts are as good as the ones created through traditional manufacturing processes. The advantage is multiplied when the only a small quantity of parts are required to satisfy specific urgent orders and also leads to the smarter overall management of stock and increased availability. Each product can be printed within 24 to 36 hours with the optimal amount of resources. Unlike traditional subtractive manufacturing, where the raw material is removed or cut away, Additive Manufacturing is a precise process which creates less waste and leftover material while at the same time minimizing machine downtime. This, in turn, provides customers with an enhanced total cost of ownership (TCO).

The first 3D printed spare parts created include four parts for use on buses and agricultural equipment. All 3D printed spare parts are manufactured in plastic and the Company is conducting further tests which will enable the future production of metal components using this technology.

CNH Industrial is further committed to continue its investigation of the capabilities of 3D printing with the aim of producing a full range of parts and promptly respond to all types of needs at every stage of the product’s lifecycle.

3D printing offers significant sustainability advantages including the optimization of raw materials, energy usage, and the overall manufacturing and supply chain.
