Dubai, a city renowned for its forward-thinking initiatives, is embarking on a monumental expansion of its marine transport network with first 3D printed Abra. Under the enthusiastic endorsement of His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman of The Executive Council of Dubai, the Dubai Marine Transport Master Plan 2030 is set to redefine the city’s aquatic transit landscape. This comprehensive blueprint outlines a multifaceted transformation, with one groundbreaking feature stealing the limelight: the world’s first 3D printed abra, constructed using cutting-edge 3D printing technology.

The facility is 5,000 square feet in size and is the largest marine maintenance facility in the region. It features five separate workshops, a 250-meter pier, a dock that can accommodate boats up to 32 meters in length, a boat crane with a lifting capacity of up to 100 tonnes, three storage areas, zones designated for marine and external tasks, administrative spaces, and a rest zone for employees.

The boatyard’s workshop has enough for sixteen vessels. Since its opening in 2018, the workshop has been essential in helping 57 RTA maritime transport ships run well and in teaching UAE nationals with expertise in marine transport repair. The workshop also increased the quality of repairs, decreased maintenance expenses by almost half, increased the operational readiness of various marine transport methods to 99 percent, and increased the lifespan of ferries and water taxis by around 25 percent. During His Highness’s visit to the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), His Excellency Mattar Al Tayer, the Director General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of RTA, presented the ambitious Master Plan of 3D printed Abra. At its core, this visionary strategy anticipates a 51% surge in marine transport users and an astounding 188% expansion in the total length of Dubai’s marine transport network. The blueprint also details the proliferation of marine transport stations, set to increase from 48 to 79, strategically positioned along key waterways throughout Dubai.

This growth doesn’t stop at infrastructure expansion. The plan envisions a substantial 400% boost in passenger transport lines and a commendable 32% increase in the marine transport fleet. These figures underscore Dubai’s unwavering dedication to fortifying and enhancing its marine transport infrastructure.
