Being one of the first universities to offer courses in 3D printing, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) offers both an online and offline course in 3D printing. This highly acclaimed university offers a 5-day course that focuses on the fundamentals of 3D printing, provides insight into multiple technologies used, materials involved, and helps you learn how to operate different kinds of 3D printers. The Additive Manufacturing for Innovative Design and Production is another 12-week course focusing on implications, applications and fundamentals of printing for manufacturing and design.

The participants of the course acquire vocabulary necessary to learn the complex, multivariate landscape of additive manufacturing equipment, materials, and applications. In addition to theoretical knowledge, the 12-week-online-course also offers professionals hands-on experience on how the technology works. For example, concludes with an in-depth case study where professionals solve a real-world design or business strategy problems using knowledge of AM.

The online course has been designed keeping in mind manufacturing, design, or engineering professionals across industries that will be influenced by products, tools, and business models enabled by AM. The course is also well-suited for professionals already using AM in an engineering environment or those tasked with implementing AM in their organisations. In addition to the online course, MIT University also offers offline short five-day course which provides learners with comprehensive understanding of AM technology, its applications and implications.

Penn State University

You can opt for the online Master of Engineering in Additive Manufacturing and Design (AMD) program offered by Penn State World Campus in collaboration with Penn State’s College of Engineering and the School of Engineering Design, Technology and professional programs. This course is worth 30 credits and explores the role played by additive manufacturing in transforming different sectors. It also teaches you how to use the additive manufacturing technology and adopt it in different industries.

Carnegie Mellon University

Carnegie Mellon University offers a two-semester full-time degree program called Master of Science in Additive Manufacturing (MSAM). Offering hands-on experience with adapting, building parts and designing with the help of current AM technology, the course uses practical methods for a better understanding of Additive Manufacturing technologies.

The Ohio State University

The Ohio State University under its Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering offers a course in additive manufacturing. The University offers five courses that include: i) Introduction to Additive Manufacturing; (ii) Additive Manufacturing for Bio-Medical Devices; (iii) Design for Additive Manufacturing; (iv) Computational Modeling of Additive Manufacturing; and v) Design and Science and Engineering Foundations of AM. Students have to select any four out of the five courses to successfully complete the AM course.

The Additive Manufacturing Certification course aims to impart training with a clear focus on the 3D printing market and AM technologies apart from offering insights on fundamental Additive Manufacturing skills that can be applied to projects directly.

Nottingham University

Opt for the one-year Master’s degree in Additive Manufacturing and 3D printing. The modules for this course include topics such as advanced additive manufacturing techniques and additive materials. To enrol for this course, you require an engineering degree at the undergraduate level.

These were some of the top universities around the world that offer courses in 3D printing/additive manufacturing.
