3D Systems to acquire Kumovis and Titan Additive, Manufacturers of Extrusion 3D Printing Technology

2 Mins read

3D Systems, one of the world’s leading 3D printing company, announced that it is simultaneously acquiring two manufacturers of extrusion 3D printing technology, namely Kumovis, a Munich, Germany-based additive manufacturing solutions provider for personalised healthcare applications, and Titan Additive LLC (Titan Robotics), the Colorado-based designer and fabricator of large-format, industrial 3D printers.

Both these acquisitions help 3D Systems to enter the extrusion 3D printing market in which it was non-present.

Kumovis has created a 3D printing process called Fused Layer Manufacturing (FLM) that is specifically tailored to the needs of regulated markets such as medical technology. It is primarily concerned with the printing of high-performance polymers such as PEEK, which is already recognised in the industry as the gold standard for medical applications. Kumovis’ innovative technology enables its customers to produce reliably and efficiently using additive manufacturing. Individualised implants and other medical products can thus be produced economically, sustainably, and with high quality – right at the point of care.

Kumovis 3D printing technology allows surgeons to provide better, faster, and more cost-effective patient outcomes.

“In addition, by joining forces with 3D Systems, we will be able to combine their outstanding solutions with our unique PEEK printing technology to offer efficient, validated end-to-end workflows to produce personalized implants and improve patient outcomes. We look forward to increasing the focus on our core competencies to help accelerate the development of the next generation of implants and transform medical device manufacturing.”

– Stefan Leonhardt, Co-CEO and Co-Founder of Kumovis

3D Systems will add a unique extrusion technology to its extensive polymer printing healthcare portfolio with this acquisition, allowing the company to expand its addressable market for personalized healthcare applications.

Titan Additive & its Extrusion 3D Printing Technology

Titan Additive is a market leader in 3D printing technology based on pellet-based polymer extrusion. It is also the sole manufacturer who provides hybrid tool head configurations. Titan Robotics offers its customers solutions by developing application-specific processes based on Titan’s proprietary additive manufacturing (AM) technology.

“The team at Titan Robotics is thrilled to become part of the world-class organization at 3D Systems, as Titan’s leadership team of Clay Guillory, Bill Macy, Maddie Guillory and I are committed to continuing Titan’s mission of changing the traditional manufacturing landscape with production additive manufacturing solutions. We are excited by the synergies this acquisition will enable to expand the adoption of industrial 3D printing across a wide variety of manufacturing industries, as pellet-based extrusion and hybrid manufacturing systems become the new standards for production applications.”

– Rahul Kasat, CEO, Titan Additive LLC

With this acquisition, 3D Systems strengthens and broadens its polymer AM solution portfolio to address new applications in markets such as Foundries, Consumer Goods, Service Bureaus, Transportation & Motorsports, Aerospace & Defence, and General Manufacturing.

3D Systems expects to complete both transactions by the end of April 2022.
