Formlabs, the 3D printing industry leader, has announced the acquisition of Micronics, a Wisconsin-based 3D printing company, to continue advancing affordable desktop SLS 3D printing. With the acquisition, the Micronics founders and team will join Formlabs in their shared mission of making SLS 3D printing available to product designers, engineers, innovators, and other makers all over the world.
Micronics is a new 3D printing company that will launch its first desktop SLS 3D printer, Micron, on Kickstarter in June 2024. The printer is intended to provide the strength and precision of SLS 3D printing technology in a compact form factor for detailed prototypes and long-lasting end-use products.
Advancing Desktop SLS 3D Printing
Formlabs, the world leader in SLS 3D printing with its Fuse 1 Series printers accounting for more than half of all powder bed fusion printers sold, was drawn to Micronics for its shared focus on powerful and accessible 3D printing, as well as demonstrations of engineering excellence, which will allow Formlabs to accelerate its SLS 3D printing capabilities. As the first choice for engineers, designers, manufacturers, and decision-makers all over the world, Formlabs is constantly expanding its ecosystem with tools that enable anyone to bring their ideas to life.
“We’re excited to welcome Henry and Luke to Formlabs. After meeting the Micronics co-founders at Open Sauce 2024, we discovered our shared vision for accessible, powerful 3D printing. The Micronics team’s talent and innovative spirit will help us to accelerate accessible SLS 3D printing to market and enable anyone to bring their ideas to life.”

Formlabs Acquires Micronics
This acquisition comes after Formlabs’ successful acquisition of Spectra in 2019, which expanded the company’s materials capabilities and added an ISO 13485-certified facility. Micronics will now work alongside Formlabs’ SLS team to develop new tools and solutions that allow product designers and innovators to unleash their creativity, take design risks, and print durable end-use parts. These collaborative efforts will increase access to 3D printing, making the technology more accessible to product users seeking the benefits of unrivalled reliability, print quality, and ease of use.
Following the acquisition, Micronics Kickstarter backers will be refunded and given a credit for any Formlabs 3D printer, which they can use now or later.
