AM-Austria recently met with representatives from the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to discuss potential cross-border collaborations as part of its internationalization strategy. Both entities are seeking to build a strategic technology partnership. Network Development Hub GmbH (NDH) organized this meeting, which is a hub that assists technology start-ups and scale-ups with commercialising and growing their businesses, with a focus on commercial capabilities, market communication, and international business development.

Dr. Johannes Homa, President of AM-Austria, visited Dubai late last year and met with key industry, technology, and research stakeholders. The primary goal of the meeting was to discuss potential future collaborations between the two regions.

What is AM-Austria?

Since 2018, AM Austria has been a technology platform dedicated to promoting and supporting the Austrian additive manufacturing industry. The platform has grown exponentially over the years and is now supported by the Federal Ministry of the Republic of Austria for Climate Action, Environment, Energy, Mobility, Innovation, and Technology (BMK), with the goal of developing Austria into an innovative pioneer in the additive manufacturing field in order to maximise the enormous potential of this technology for this location.

After H.H. Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum (Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE) announced a national 3D printing strategy in 2016, complete with a roadmap, the UAE is now regarded as the region’s leader in introducing additive manufacturing technologies. The ambitious initiative to build a strategic technology partnership aims to put technology to use for humanity and to establish the UAE and Dubai as the leading centres of 3D printing technology by 2030. The strategy aims to build 25 per cent of its buildings through 3D printing by 2030. The UAE primarily focuses on three major sectors: construction, medical devices, and consumer end products.

Dr. Homa presented to several organizations, including Sharjah Research Technology Innovation Park, Dubai Future Foundation, University of Dubai, Khalifa University, Mubadala Aerospace, Digital Dubai Authority, SmartWorld, and Expo2020, as part of the tour led by Naveed Syed (Founder and CEO of NDH) and its Advisor Dr Saeed Al Dhaheri.

Austria, despite its small size, is regarded as one of the most innovative countries in additive manufacturing. It has deep and broad expertise spanning the entire additive value chain and various additive technologies. International collaborations like this one aim to start a fruitful exchange, strengthen countries’ positions, and advance additive manufacturing technologies.

As a next step, both countries intend to discuss specific strategies for launching collaboration as soon as possible.
