Key Takeaways

Snowbird Technologies, a U.S.-based provider of expeditionary advanced manufacturing solutions, has partnered with Meltio to develop a containerised hybrid manufacturing system for defence applications. The collaboration integrates Meltio’s Engine Blue laser metal deposition technology into Snowbird’s next-generation deployable system, creating a solution capable of producing and repairing critical components directly at the point of need.

Designed for rapid deployment in challenging operational environments, the system combines additive and subtractive manufacturing capabilities within a ruggedised container. This approach addresses supply chain vulnerabilities whilst enabling defence forces to manufacture, repair and sustain mission-critical components closer to operational areas, reducing lead times and material waste.

Snowbird’s SAMM Tech platform, powered by the Meltio Engine Blue, features a patented gantry-mounted hybrid manufacturing cell housed within a ruggedised container. The system delivers on-demand repair, replacement and prototype production capabilities in austere conditions, supporting both metal and plastic fabrication through advanced hybrid material processing.

The platform’s design prioritises mobility and rapid deployment, with full compatibility with existing military logistics infrastructure. Its modular construction allows operation in extreme land and maritime conditions, providing defence forces with manufacturing capabilities that reduce dependence on centralised supply chains. The system supports a wide range of industrial metals, including aluminium, titanium and marine-grade bronze, which are critical materials for defence and naval applications.

This hybrid manufacturing system for defence enables reliable production and repair of structural and functional components in deployed environments. The containerised format provides protection for the manufacturing equipment whilst maintaining portability, allowing defence organisations to establish manufacturing capabilities wherever operational requirements dictate.

Real-World Defence Applications

The SAMM Tech platform has already demonstrated practical value in naval operations. In one documented case, the system enabled the rapid repair of a reverse osmosis pump aboard a U.S. Navy vessel, restoring freshwater generation capabilities within hours and preventing an early return to port. This real-world application highlights the operational benefits of having manufacturing capabilities available at the point of need.

Meltio’s wire-laser metal additive manufacturing technology has been adopted across multiple defence programmes worldwide. Military and naval forces have deployed the technology to support onboard manufacturing, forward repair operations and supply chain resilience initiatives. The Engine Blue’s capability to work with defence-grade metals makes it suitable for producing components that meet stringent military specifications.

Snowbird and Meltio will present the containerised manufacturing solution at the 10th Annual Military Additive Manufacturing Summit & Technology Showcase (MILAM) in Tampa, Florida, from 3 to 5 February 2026. The companies will showcase the system at booth number 125 during the event, which serves as a strategic forum for government, defence and industry representatives to examine advanced manufacturing technologies being deployed across military forces.

“This collaboration further validates the role of laser-wire directed energy deposition technology in the most demanding defence environments. By integrating the Meltio Engine Blue into our next-generation SAMM Tech platform, we are demonstrating how laser-wire DED can deliver reliable, repeatable hybrid manufacturing at the point of need, enabling critical repair and production where traditional supply chains and infrastructure are unavailable,” said Scott Morse, Chief Executive at Snowbird Technologies.

Gabriel Ortiz, Americas Channel Manager at Meltio, emphasised the technology’s applicability to defence requirements: “Defence organisations require manufacturing solutions that are reliable, flexible and deployable. Integrating the Meltio Engine Blue into Snowbird’s containerised system demonstrates how our technology can support expeditionary operations, helping defence users strengthen supply chain resilience and maintain operational readiness in the most challenging environments.”

The collaboration between Snowbird’s expertise in deployable manufacturing systems and Meltio’s industrial metal additive technology represents the accelerating adoption of point-of-need manufacturing across defence, security and government operations. The system’s ability to operate independently of traditional manufacturing infrastructure addresses critical operational challenges faced by military forces in remote and contested environments.
